After spending an entire weekend watching sports during the 4th of July weekend, I figured I'd just comment on a few things that I saw.
1. Jeff Francoeur Demoted/Recalled - About time Mr. "Free Swinger" got a reality check. I love this guy, but he's reverted back to his rookie season when he had no discipline and swung at everything. The difference is this year is average is terrible, a meager .234 for the season and a barely over the Mendoza Line June when he batted .206 for the month. He's already been recalled after going 4-for-5 in AA Mississippi and the Braves have put 3 more people on the DL.
2, Daytona 400 - Kyle Busch is still on fire. His team is dialed in right now with a Series-high 6 wins this year and the youngster looks primed to start The Chase in first place. My guys, Hendrick MS and more importantly Jeff Gordon, still can't catch a break. Gordon got spun-out with two laps to go running in 2nd place. But he admitted part of the blame by coming down on top of the 99 car of Carl Edwards but that restart was garbage. NASCAR should look into lagging restarts in the future, but that's just me. I think they're bad for the sport and it tends to cause accidents.
3. Arena Football Playoffs - I'm not a huge AFL fan, but I have to admit, it's some fun stuff. You have basically all offense, which is what people love in the NFL anyway. But I have two major officiating gripes from the past weekend. The ending to the New York-Philly Soul game was terrible. Philly "scored" the go-ahead touchdown with no time left. Actually, the receiver was about a yard short and there was about 1.5 seconds left. When the play was reviewed, it was upheld and the game was over. Huh? I know the replay views weren't great, but I could clearly tell he was short. But that wasn't the worst officiating, that went to the Grand Rapids-Chicago game, when a Chicago defender slammed the Grand Rapids QB to the ground, twice, and didn't get ejected. However the Grand Rapids player who defended his QB did get tossed. Come on guys, it's 7-on-7 there's about 4-5 refs, you should see this stuff. First rule of officiating - Don't get mentioned in the recap in a bad way. Two crews failed that last weekend.
4. Wimbledon Finals - CBS must have loved it's ratings last weekend. An all Williams sister women's singles final, then they go out and win double hours later and a 6 hour marathon (with rain) for Nadal-Federer for the men's finals. And Nadal was a tiebreaker away from beating Federer in straight sets for the second time in a major final this year. Just a great match, and I wish I caught more of it. ESPN already has made it an "Instant Classic" and rightfully so.
That's a pretty solid weekend of sports, on top of all the barbaques, fireworks and traffic that goes along with the 4th of July. Hope everyone had a great time and a safe and happy 4th.
